Scavenging keeps you alive today; farming keeps you alive next week. Work a plot, keep it watered, and turn a patch of dirt into a renewable supply line that doesn't depend on luck.
Put down roots
Plant crops, run irrigation to keep them growing, and harvest when they're ready. It's a commitment — a stationary investment in a world where standing still is dangerous — but it pays back in a supply you control.
The cash crop
One plant is worth more than food: tobacco. Seeds are scarce and sold only by the Rare Items Merchant; a mature plant gives 3-6 leaves and maybe one seed back, so every field is a recurring cost, not a one-time buy. Tobacco is the first step of the cigarette currency — and anyone can raid a field they didn't plant, so a good crop is a target.
The self-sufficient survivor
Pair a plot with fishing, crafting and cooking and you stop living hand-to-mouth. Farming is the backbone of a settlement that can feed a squad, not just one desperate survivor.
