First thing to unlearn: the dead here are not slow, and they are not stupid. They're awake. Always. Relentlessly, exhaustingly awake.

The old world kept quiet out of courtesy. Out here quiet is currency. A gunshot is a sentence you might not get to finish, and a crowd of them is just the world answering noise with more of itself.

Move soft. Pick your fights or don't have them. Morning is a long way off, and it counts the ones who forgot.

The body keeps its own books, and it does not forgive a missed payment.

Skip the meal. Skip the night's sleep. Walk too far into the wrong season with the wrong coat. It starts charging interest — in your hands first, then your aim, then your judgment. There's water with fish in it if you know how to wait, and a warm place to lie down if you know how to build one.

The survivors who look calm aren't brave. They've just learned to pay on time.

The old money rotted with the old world. What's left, you can hold in one hand — and it still burns.

A life is worth a carton. A favor, a single stick. There are back rooms where the whole trade runs on it, tables where you barter one thing for another with no coin between you, and traders who'll take it off your hands for a price that always favors them.

Everything out here has a price. The only trick is knowing whose.

Every compound that outlives the people who built it has a sound to it. A low mechanical hum under the floorboards, fed on fuel somebody bled for.

The hum keeps the lights honest and the machines fed — the ones that turn ore into steel, crude into something that'll run an engine, a dead battery back into a heartbeat. Kill the hum and the dark comes back into rooms that had forgotten it.

The things outside are very, very good at noticing the dark. Whoever owns the fuel owns the night.

Anyone can find. Finding is luck. The ones who last can make.

Scrap into a working rifle. Raw metal into a blade that holds an edge. A ruined engine coaxed back into a getaway that outruns whatever's chasing it. Every skill you take the time to learn opens a door that stays open.

Knowledge is the one thing out here nobody can pull off your body when you're down. Learn fast. Learn more than the next survivor.

Not everyone out here walks alone.

You'll hear them before the brush even moves — low, four-legged, loyal to exactly one person and no one else. They remember a scent longer than most men remember a face. Feed one, raise one, teach it, and it will put itself between you and the dark without ever being asked.

Lose one, and you'll understand why survivors bury dogs deeper than they bury people.

There are two ways to die past the wire. One is quick, and you won't have time to be afraid of it.

The other begins as warmth. A fever you could almost talk yourself out of. And behind it, a clock you cannot see starts counting — and it does not stop for prayers, or tourniquets, or how much you had left to do.

Some go looking for where the sickness runs thickest, sealed head to toe, because that's where the real medicine is. Most of them are counting too.

There are no nations anymore. There's the crew you ride with, and the crews you don't. That's the only biography that matters out here.

The lines on the map get drawn in fuel and redrawn in blood, and they move every week. Hold ground and someone with fewer morals and more ammunition is already planning the day they take it from you.

Ride alone if that's your nature. Just know the map has no blank spaces left — only territory that hasn't decided you're a problem yet.

A few places still hold the line. Step inside the wire and the world lets out a breath — trade happens, blades stay sheathed, the guns on the towers point outward instead of in.

You can even sit long enough to become someone in there. Clean up, get patched, get named. Settle a grievance in front of people who'll actually hear it.

Don't mistake any of it for safety. The wire is a truce, not a promise. The moment you step back through it, the world remembers exactly where it left off with you.

Once in a while the sky returns something it took. A crash trailing smoke. A crate under a failing chute. A light on a horizon that has no business having lights.

It will draw a crowd. It always draws a crowd. Whatever's inside is rarely worth what it costs to keep it.

But the meeting — the standoff, the long quiet while everyone does the math, the choice of who finally walks away holding it — that's the only kind of story anyone out here tells twice.

And underneath all of it, the frequency is still broadcasting.

Coordinates, the old men swear. A lie, say the ones who tried to follow it. A prayer, say the ones who lost everything and needed somewhere to point it.

It doesn't matter which. Survivors have always needed something to walk toward. Follow it and you'll find work, and answers, and worse. The walking is the point. The walking was always the point.

I found where they come from. Not from nowhere — from the ground. A mound of them in the ward at Pillbox, warm, pushing out walkers like a wound pushes out pus. I burned it. It came back nine days later.

There is one in every place people died crowded: the hospitals, the stations, the square, the terminal, the fort. Sixteen that I have counted. The county has its own, quieter ones, at the ranch and the mill.

Rule I paid for: the loot is next to the heart. Always. Whatever it is you need, it is in the building the mound is in.

A ward keeps medicine. A station keeps pistol rounds and a vest. A farm keeps seeds and diesel and the tools that turned soil. The city keeps clothes, and things that glitter that the fence still wants. The fort keeps rifle rounds and a mask, behind more of them than I have ever seen in one place.

Nothing refills while you stand there. A cabinet is worth opening once a quarter hour. A crate, once a morning. The people who camp a building are the people I bury.

The two rings — the plant, and the far west — keep the best of everything and the worst of them. Take pills. Take a counter. Take somebody.

They have started putting the lights back on. Crews at the old plant, a foreman with a list, substations that need to be fed before the lines can be strung. It will take a season, maybe two, and nobody alive will do all of it alone: the skills it needs are spread across too many hands on purpose.

I carried a spool and a box of insulators into the control room yesterday. The foreman handed me a drawing of what the grid used to be. I have looked at it more than I have looked at my own face.

Under the city there is a line that was never on any grid. A captain sends people down it for survivors. The people who come back up do not describe it.
